Do I have to believe in God?
Overeaters Anonymous is a group fellowship of individuals who all suffer from this same disease. This disease is known as admitting to being a "compulsive overeater" but we don't stop there. We are an open and all-inclusive group of associates. We include those obsessed with body image, relationship problems related to food, bulimics, anorexics, etc.
In the Twelve Steps in Step Two (2) we read about a "Power greater that ourselves." Then in the Step Three (3) and Step Five (5) we see the name "God".
Now. Does this mean I have to profess the existence of and or believe in God? No. No, you do not have to. It is not a requirement. But we have discovered that there is most definitely some sort of a spiritual component to the Steps, to this Program and how you use or work it, and to your recovery from this gripping disease. Spirituality is a part of the way out of this disease. It is a part of the way how you get better. Without it you may not get far. The webmaster tried it without the spirituality and she did not get far. Trust this. She admits that strength does come from somewhere and she found it did not come from herself. She started with a doorknob as being a higher power than herself. When that ceased to work, she used her group as her higher power than herself. Courage came and she concluded that God existed and she now believes. But you don't have to.
